Community Grant Program

The Book Across the Bay Community Grant Program is our way of giving something back to our home community, and supporting the values that the Book Across the Bay event was created to promote. Each year, we make grants using proceeds from the previous winter’s race. The amount of money we can give varies year by year, depending on the event’s success. Over the years we have given more than $160,000 back to the community.

In prior years, the Grant Program solicited applications, but starting with the 2013 event, the Book Across the Bay Grant Program was refocused to support groups and organizations that contribute coordinated volunteer efforts that help make the event happen. This change has been made to ensure sustainability of the Book Across the Bay event, to prevent organizer and volunteer burnout, and to further extend ownership of the event throughout the community.

At the 2017 event, more than a dozen groups helped out by providing volunteers in critical areas such as setting up and taking down tents, preparing and serving food, assembling registration packets, helping prepare the event course, cleaning up after the event, and other tasks. The Book Across the Bay Community Grant Program distributed nearly $16,000 to these groups, which include:

  • Ashland Facilities Improvement Team (FIT)
  • Chequamegon Bay Area AFS
  • 4-H CANSKI
  • The Brick
  • Reins of Inspiration
  • Penokee Mountain School
  • Marengo Valley School
  • Northland College
  • Washburn High School Boys Soccer
  • Washburn High School Boys Baseball
  • Washburn Schools Music Boosters
